Frequently asked questions

Can I receive a Medicare rebate?

The Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative allows Australians to access Medicare rebates for counselling services. Such services must be provided by a registered psychologist following a referral by a GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist. Medicare rebates are currently available for up to 10 individual counselling sessions per calendar year. The following document provides information about the Better Access to Mental Health initiative.

How can my rebate be processed?

Payment at the end of each appointment is required before you can claim your rebate. Little Oak Psychology has electronic facilities on site to offer Medicare electronic claims. Alternatively, you can seek your own rebate.

Can I use my private health insurance?

You cannot use your private health insurance ancillary cover to pay the gap between the Medicare rebate and the charge for psychological services. You will need to decide whether you will use Medicare or your private health insurance ancillary cover to pay for psychological services. It is recommended you speak with your insurer to check your private health insurance policy covers psychology.

Is assessment covered under the Better Access Initiative?

Better Access Medicare Items cannot be used for formal psychological assessment such as cognitive and educational assessment.

How many appointments will be needed?

The number of appointments needed varies from person to person. The presenting concerns will determine the most appropriate intervention. Immediate, short-term interventions are available, as well as ongoing, longer-term interventions for more complex issues.

Can you support National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants?

We can see NDIS participants who have opted to either self-manage or have a plan manager administer their funds.
